Cinco de Mayo Isolation Celebration with Hart Agency!

May 05, 2020

For most of us, Cinco de Mayo is a fun way to enjoy Mexican cuisine & margaritas with friends. This year, we'll be looking at the history of the holiday, our favorite tequila brands, and ways to celebrate at home. Cause when Cinco de Mayo lands on Taco Tuesday, what better way to enjoy your day than with tinga & margs?

History & Culture

Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for "Fifth of May", commemorates the day of Mexico's victory over the French at the Battle of the Puebla in 1862.

Currently, the day is celebrated in Mexico with reenactments, parades, dancing, food, & drinks; however it is mostly celebrated in the city the battle took place. Popular dishes include chicken tinga, mole poblano (a dish that includes both chiles and chocolate), & agua fresca.

Local Promotions & Events

Look to your favorite local Mexican restaurant for promotions & curbside pickup. Many are offering margaritas by the pitcher, party packs, and zoom dance parties.

For example, Long Islanders can check out K Pacho for a "Virtual Fiesta" with DJ Scuba live on Facebook from 5:00-8:00 pm tonight.

Tequila!

Some of our favorite tequila brands are hosting virtual events and providing unique content this Cinco de Mayo! You can enjoy relaxing in the comfort of your home while sipping a delicious, fresh cocktail and expanding your mixology skills.

Patron Tequila features easy to make margarita recipes, tropical zoom backgrounds for your virtual happy hour, how-to videos, and live Instagram Bartending today from 5:00-10:00pm EST.

1800 Tequila is participating an Instagram concert with Lauren Jaureaui at 9pm EST on her story. For every view, 1800 will donate $1 to @musicforrelief, a nonprofit committed to supporting music professionals affected by COVID-19. Other artists will be featured throughout the month, so follow 1800 on Instagram for more.

El Jimador Tequila created a Cinco Bingo board, so you and your friends can compete for 5 in a row. Winner buys guac when brunch resumes!

Altos Tequila is doing a Worldwide Bartending Challenge, where you can watch 26 Bartenders from around the world create sustainable margaritas. Challenge your friends to create the most unique margarita or paloma today too! You can also use this opportunity to paint the bottle to use as a flower vase or add some festive cheer. They have a video on Instagram to give you inspiration!

Creative Celebrating

While we find new fun ways to celebrate while staying safe, our personal favorite is virtual happy hour while creating our own cocktails, and trying to find unique ingredients in the pantry to do a fun twist on the old classic.

Some tips:

  • Infuse your favorite tequila with jalapenos for a spicy kick. Balance with something light like cucumbers.
  • Craft a pink lemonade champagne margarita. Don't be afraid to include other spirits.
  • Flavor with pineapple juice (or your favorite juice) for a fruity compliment to the citrus of the tequila. Or you can muddle fruit at the bottom of your glass instead.
  • Grab the tomato juice & hot sauce to make a Bloody Maria. Perfect if you're starting your day early.
  • Got grapefruit soda? Add tequila for a simple and clean Paloma.
  • Bust out the blender for a frozen take on any of these options!

Let us know your celebration plans in the comments below. We'd love to see your creative cocktails and any promotions you know about in New York State. Are you getting takeout, or mixing it up in the kitchen? Tag us on social media so we can celebrate in spirit with you! - @hartagency

As always thanks for reading, stay safe, and have fun! We look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Salud!

What is Tequila? Tequila is a distilled spirit and a type of mezcal. The liquor is made from agave plants and produced only in specific parts of Mexico. Depending on where the agave is grown, the taste of tequila can vary by the bottle. Similar to the way whiskey can be broken down into more specific categories like bourbon and scotch, tequila can be broken down as well. There are three main types of tequila—blanco (silver, unaged), reposado (aged for 2 to 9 months in wood barrels), and añejo (aged for a minimum of 1 year in wood barrels).
